How many people by now have no idea that eating more fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and drinking plenty of (unpolluted) water is better for you than processed food?

I know it. Everyone knows it.

What these arrogant…

I would love to be able to buy organic fruits, and free range meats. But I buy top ramen. Why? Because its $1.29 for a pack of 6. That’s less than a quarter for a meal.

When I worked at a grocery store, it was so depressing to see the shit people on food stamps would buy, since they were trying to get as much food for as little money as possible.

One of my really shitty coworkers would make fun of them, and say shit like “They don’t need food stamps, look at how fat their kids are. Obviously they are getting enough food.” (seriously, fuck that guy.)

Its not that they are getting enough food, its that the food they could afford is crap.

Nailed it.

Also, ever heard of a food desert? There are vast swathes of land in the United States where people literally do not even have access to fresh produce.

Take Detroit, for example; I use this because I have lived in the greater Metro Detroit area for most of my life and received my MSW there. If you have never been to Detroit, let me tell you: the city is massive, covering 143 square miles. Almost 40% of the city lives below the federally-defined poverty line and most of the remaining 60% are barely above it. There are no supermarkets in the city of Detroit. The closest thing to a supermarket Detroit has is the Honeybee, which is a specialty market that sells foods often used in Mexican dishes and special import products from Mexico.

In order to get to a supermarket, a person would have to drive to one of the outlying cities, which could be anywhere from ten to thirty miles; the problem with that is that a) gas is expensive as fuck and b) personal transportation is not something that is always readily available to many families in Detroit. Many people rely on the incredibly unreliable SMART bus system or the People Mover to go about their daily business.

So what am I saying? I am saying that these are people who literally do not have access to fresh produce and healthy eating. When you work two jobs and have at least one child, are still struggling to make ends meet, and have no supermarket to shop from, how are you going to feed your child? You are going to buy whatever you can for under $10 at the gas station or corner store or fast food restaurant because if you don’t, your child will starve.

If I had to choose between starving and eating unhealthy food just to survive, I’d take the unhealthy food too.

Amen.
